It's time to cast your vote for the Caller-Times High School Athlete of the Week for May 4-9, proudly presented by Apple Dental Center. This week's standout athletes come from Tuloso-Midway, San Diego, Hebbronville, Calallen, Santa Gertrudis Academy, Flour Bluff, Ingleside, and London—each bringing their A-game to the field.
But the action doesn't stop there. The Veterans Memorial baseball team put on a clinic in their Class 5A Division I area round series against PSJA North at Cabaniss Baseball Field in Corpus Christi. Pitcher Jordan Garza was the star of the show, celebrating after recording the final out of a nail-biting 5-4 win in Game 1 on Thursday, May 7. The Eagles' defense was equally impressive, with Trae Hernandez leaping to avoid a baserunner before firing to first for a double play, and catcher Ryan Morgan making a valiant tag attempt at the plate.
Offensively, Davian Garcia electrified the crowd with a game-tying triple in the fourth inning, while Jordan Garza got fired up at second base after giving the Eagles the lead in the same frame. Head coach Lee Yeager was in the thick of it, discussing calls with the home plate umpire as his team fought for every out. Jonathan Reyes also delivered key pitches from the mound, helping secure the victory.
Whether you're cheering for a local hero or reliving the Eagles' playoff drama, now's your chance to support the athletes who make high school sports unforgettable. Vote today and show your school pride!
