The high school sports season is heating up, and it's time to crown the next Gainesville-area Athlete of the Week for April 27-May 3. From clutch performances on the diamond to record-breaking jumps on the track, this week's nominees delivered moments that had fans on their feet.

Last week's winner, Savannah Loges of the Oak Hall girls lacrosse team, set a high bar with over 5,000 votes. She made 8 saves, shut out Pensacola Catholic in a critical fourth quarter while her team was down by one, and even assisted on the game-winning goal. Now, a new group of athletes is ready to claim the spotlight.

Our nomination process has evolved this season. Coaches, athletic directors, and statisticians can send nominees and stats to nram@usatodayco.com for consideration. We also pull standout performances from MaxPreps to ensure no athlete is overlooked. Here are the top contenders from the past week:

In track and field, one athlete soared to first place in the triple jump at the Class 1A-Region 2 meet, showcasing explosive power and precision. On the baseball diamond, a Tiger star racked up four hits, two runs, two doubles, a triple, and three RBIs to lead their team to a dominant 12-2 district title win over Williston. Meanwhile, a Red Devil standout contributed one run, one hit, and two RBIs in a 9-4 region semifinal-clinching victory over Marathon. Not to be outdone, a Hurricane player delivered two hits, three RBIs, and a double in a thrilling 7-6 district title win over Deltona.

The action wasn't limited to offense. In a 5A district 5 championship game at Gainesville High School, defensive standouts like Forest Leighton Hetzel, Lana Renicks, and Adriana Koralewski made game-changing plays, from tags at third base to a sprint home that had the crowd roaring. Taylor Rogers and the entire Gainesville squad showed grit in a mound conference that defined the intensity of the matchup.

Now it's your turn to vote. Cast your ballot for the athlete who impressed you most, and stay tuned to see who takes home this week's title. Whether it's a clutch hit, a game-saving defensive play, or a personal best on the track, these athletes are proving why they're the best in the Gainesville area.
