The week of May 3-9 delivered another round of standout performances from high school male athletes across the Des Moines metro area. With conference meets in full swing, athletes in track and field, soccer, tennis, and golf pushed their limits as they prepare for the state qualifying meets this week. Curtis (Indianola Track and Field)
At the Little Hawkeye Conference meet on May 5, Curtis dominated the boys discus with a winning throw of 180 feet, 5 inches—the third-best in the state, according to Varsity Bound. He outdistanced his own teammate, Max Bauer, by 9 feet, 5 inches to take the top spot.
Miller (Dowling Catholic Track and Field)
Miller anchored the third leg of the Dowling Catholic 4x100-meter relay team, which blazed to a state-best time of 41.32 seconds at the CIML boys track and field meet on May 7 at Waukee. That effort edged out their own 41.34-second mark from the Drake Relays in April. Miller also placed second individually in the open 100 meters with a swift 10.80 seconds.
Martinez-Sanchez (Des Moines North Soccer)
In a commanding 10-0 victory over Waterloo East on May 4, Martinez-Sanchez showcased his playmaking skills by dishing out four assists and adding a goal of his own for the Polar Bears.
Duax (Ankeny Centennial Soccer)
Facing Class 4A's top-ranked team, Ankeny Centennial's Duax delivered a four-goal performance on seven shots during a 5-2 win over Waukee on May 8. His offensive outburst helped the Jaguars improve to an unbeaten 10-0-2 record.
Moon (North Polk Tennis)
At the North Polk Invitational on May 8, Moon teamed with Cohen Richardson to go 3-0 in the No. 1 doubles spot. The duo blanked Southeast Polk's Cohen Fuller and Jacoby Marshall 10-0, then posted back-to-back 10-3 victories over two Boone teams to secure the tournament win.
