The high school baseball season has already made the turn from regular-season battles to postseason drama, and teams across Cleveland, Gaston, and Lincoln counties are deep into their NCHSAA and NCISAA playoff runs. But before the 2026 campaign wraps up and official awards roll out, The Gaston Gazette and Shelby Star are giving fans a chance to have their say: Who was the top player in the Foothills area this spring?

With stats updated through the first week of state playoff action, the competition is fierce. Polls are open through May 17 at midnight, so here's your chance to vote for the athlete who delivered the most unforgettable season.

Canton Bare, Lincoln Charter — Bare has been a force at the plate, hitting .457 with five home runs, seven doubles, three triples, 22 RBIs, and 32 runs scored heading into the NCHSAA 4A West third-round matchup on May 12. His combination of power and speed makes him a constant threat on the bases.

Josh Beam, East Lincoln — Beam is doing it all: a .378 batting average with three doubles, a triple, 12 RBIs, and 11 runs scored, plus a dominant 7-0 pitching record and a microscopic 0.66 ERA. With 56 strikeouts in just 42⅔ innings, he’s been nearly unhittable heading into the NCHSAA 5A West third round on May 12.

Brock Bumgardner, Cherryville — Bumgardner is a dual threat with a .438 average, three home runs, 12 doubles, a triple, 44 RBIs, and 22 runs scored. On the mound, he’s 6-3 with a 2.67 ERA and 64 strikeouts over 36⅔ innings, proving his value in every phase of the game as Cherryville heads into the NCHSAA 2A West third round on May 12.

Elijah Cunningham, North Gaston — Cunningham has been a consistent run producer, batting .420 with two home runs, eight doubles, a triple, 33 RBIs, and 32 runs scored. His ability to drive in runs and get on base has been key for his team all spring.

Now it’s your turn. Cast your vote below and help crown the top baseball player in the region for 2026. The poll runs until May 17 at midnight—don't miss your chance to make your voice heard!
