The nominations are in, and it's time to make your voice heard! We're thrilled to announce the latest round of voting for the El Paso Children's Hospital Athlete of the Week, featuring standout performances from April 27 to May 2. This week, we've got 10 incredible nominees from track and field, baseball, and softball, representing Las Cruces, Mayfield, Organ Mountain, Centennial, and Gadsden. Last week's champion was Organ Mountain softball's Natalie Menchaca, who crushed it with 11 RBIs on eight hits during a three-game sweep of Centennial—a tough act to follow!
From blazing sprints to clutch hits, these athletes left it all on the field and track. Donnail Escudero (Organ Mountain boys track and field) dominated the 200 and 400 meters at the John Mirimanian Invitational, while Laws took first in the 110 hurdles and long jump. Coombs showed incredible endurance with wins in the 800 and 3200 meters, and Matherly proved unstoppable in the discus and shot put. Gaytan soared to victory in both the long jump and triple jump. On the diamond, Bencomo drove in four RBIs in a 16-12 win over Organ Mountain, and Roberto delivered a clutch RBI single in the seventh inning to help the Trojans edge Organ Mountain 6-5 and clinch their first district title in over a decade. Barela tallied four RBIs in an 11-8 win over Centennial, Martinez racked up three RBIs in a loss and four in a 12-10 victory, and McNiece rounded out the list with strong performances.
