It's time to crown the next champion! The Battle Creek Enquirer Athlete of the Week for May 4–9 is up for grabs, and we need your vote. Presented by Bronson Battle Creek Hospital, this weekly honor celebrates the top high school sports performances from Monday through Saturday, featuring standout athletes from Lakeview and Harper Creek.
This week's nominees delivered unforgettable moments on the diamond, the pitch, and the track. In baseball, Harper Creek's Kobe Cordova shined in the All-City Tournament, going 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI in the championship win over Pennfield. He also drove in the go-ahead run in the ninth inning of a thrilling semifinal victory against Lakeview.
On the soccer field, Lakeview's Layla Huffman powered the Spartans to their sixth straight All-City Girls Soccer Tournament title, scoring two goals and adding an assist in a 5–2 win over Harper Creek. Meanwhile, in softball, Harper Creek's Kaylee Kirkpatrick delivered the decisive blow—a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 6–6 tie and secure a 9–8 All-City Tournament championship victory over Lakeview.
On the track, Harper Creek's DJ Wood had a record-breaking week. He shattered his own school records in both the 110-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles during a dual meet against Marshall. He then lowered his 300 hurdles mark again to 38.44 seconds at the Berrien Spring Shamrock Invitational, also winning the 110 hurdles to help Harper Creek claim the team title.
Voting is open until Wednesday at 5 p.m., and every vote counts. The winner will be featured in a special Athlete of the Week spotlight story in the Sunday edition of the Enquirer. So rally your team, friends, and family—cast your vote now and help these athletes earn the recognition they deserve!
