It was another thrilling week of high school sports across Southwestern Indiana, with athletes delivering standout performances that had fans on their feet. Now, it's your turn to decide who deserves the spotlight. Vote now for the Courier & Press Athlete of the Week, presented by Orthopaedic Associates, for May 4-9.
From the golf course to the track, and from the softball diamond to the archery range, these stars shined bright. You can cast your vote as often as you'd like until 10 a.m. CT Friday. Here's a look at the nominees and what made their weeks unforgettable:
Quinn Bane, Princeton golf: The senior closed out the Princeton Invitational with style, carding an even-par 72 at Princeton Country Club. His 2-under on the back nine earned him individual medalist honors, proving he's a clutch competitor under pressure.
Grayson Coughlin, Memorial golf: Another senior golfer making waves, Coughlin took home medalist honors at the Wildcat Invitational with a sharp 1-under par 71 at Sultan's Run. Consistency and precision defined his round.
Kenley Ferguson, Southridge softball: The senior slugger was unstoppable at the plate, going 7-of-12 with nine RBIs and seven runs in four games. Her hot bat helped the Raiders win eight of their last nine, making them a team to watch.
Josie Friend, Mater Dei softball: Power was the name of the game for Friend, who went 5-for-8 with two home runs, a double, and nine RBIs in wins over Reitz and Memorial. She's a force in the middle of the lineup.
Allison Golba, Memorial archery: In her final tournament, the senior archer shot a career-best 294 out of 300, finishing second out of 2,697 competitors in the high school girls division at the NASP Eastern National Tournament. A true testament to years of dedication.
Mya Hudson, Pike Central track: Hudson broke her own school record in the 100-meter hurdles with a winning time of 15.54 seconds on Senior Night against North Posey. That's the kind of performance that inspires a whole team.
Kinley Miller, Reitz softball: Miller was a hitting machine, going 8-for-16 with two home runs, five RBIs, six runs, and four walks in five games. Her standout effort—3-for-3 with four runs and three RBIs—helped take down No. 1 (1A) Barr-Reeve.
Brycen Mroz, Northeast Dubois baseball: The junior did it all for the Jeeps, going 6-of-13 with three doubles, four RBIs, six runs, and five walks in five wins. He also tossed a complete-game victory with eight strikeouts against Bedford North Lawrence. That's a true two-way star.
Danielle Neel, Castle softball: Neel powered the Knights to at least a share of the SIAC title, going 7-of-13 with one home run—a grand slam against Memorial—and nine RBIs in three games. Her timely hitting was crucial down the stretch.
