Virginia Wesleyan Marlins softball made a thunderous statement in their 2026 NCAA Tournament opener, steamrolling the John Jay Bloodhounds 14-0 in a five-inning mercy rule victory Thursday at Broyles Field. The dominant performance showcased the Marlins' offensive firepower and pitching depth, setting the stage for a promising postseason run.
Junior Emma Adams earned the win with three solid innings, allowing just one hit while striking out two. Freshman Savannah Ballou followed with a scoreless inning of relief, adding a strikeout of her own. Senior Emma Orr closed the door in the fifth, working around two hits and a walk while recording a strikeout to seal the shutout.
The Marlins wasted no time asserting their dominance. In the first inning, Laci Campbell ignited the rally by getting hit by a pitch and swiping second base. Morgan Tucker then reached on an outfield error that brought home the game's first run. Taylor McQueen followed with an RBI single, and Virginia Wesleyan quickly built a 3-0 lead.
The second inning turned into a fireworks display. After Riley Curtice scored on an RBI walk by Samantha Deitsch, a John Jay error allowed Sarah Prosser to cross the plate. McQueen added a sacrifice fly before Alison Pollack crushed a two-run home run to center field. The power surge continued as Olivia Knight followed with a solo homer, extending the lead to 9-0.
Virginia Wesleyan kept their foot on the gas in the third inning. Curtice scored on a groundout by Paiton Everett, and Prosser later came home on another John Jay error, pushing the lead to 11-0.
The Marlins capped their offensive explosion with three runs in the fourth. Orr scored on an RBI walk by Everett, Reese Penny delivered a sacrifice fly, and Cali Megaro added an RBI fielder's choice to complete the 14-0 rout.
With this commanding victory, Virginia Wesleyan advances to face the Manhattanville Valiants on Friday in the opening game of Day 2 at the NCAA Regional. If Thursday's performance is any indication, the Marlins are poised to make some serious noise in the tournament.
