Virginia Tech's softball team put together a remarkable run in the ACC Tournament, but their championship hopes came up just short against top-seeded Florida State. The Hokies fell 2-1 in a tightly contested final, showcasing the kind of pitching that has defined their tournament journey.
After surrendering just one run in back-to-back wins over Virginia and Duke, Virginia Tech's pitching staff was once again stellar against the Seminoles. Emma Mazzarone, pitching for the third consecutive day, set the tone early by striking out the side in the first inning. Freshman Avery Layton stepped in during the third and delivered a masterful performance, combining with Mazzarone to hold Florida State to just three hits over seven innings.
The Hokies struck first in the top of the first when Michelle Chatfield singled home Jordan Lynch for a 1-0 lead. But Florida State answered in the bottom of the second, as Kennedy Harp's double brought two runners home to give the Seminoles a 2-1 advantage they wouldn't relinquish. Virginia Tech had a golden opportunity in the sixth inning, loading the bases, but couldn't push across the tying run.
Through three games in the ACC Tournament, the Hokies' pitching allowed a combined three runs—a testament to their dominance in the circle. However, the bats, which had been so reliable during the regular season, went quiet at the worst possible time.
Despite the heartbreak, the season isn't over. Virginia Tech now awaits its fate in the NCAA Selection Show, where they'll learn their destination for the 2026 NCAA Division I Softball Tournament. The show airs Sunday at 7 p.m. on ESPN2.
Congrats to the Hokies on a gutsy tournament performance. Their pitching has them poised for a deep postseason run.
