It's tournament time again for Virginia Tech softball, and while the Hokies are dancing their way to the NCAA Division I Softball Championship for the seventh straight year, the path wasn't handed to them on a silver platter. In fact, many fans feel the Hokies got a raw deal.
Virginia Tech will head south to the Baton Rouge Regional, kicking off their postseason on Friday at 4 p.m. ET against South Alabama. They'll also face host LSU and Akron in the double-elimination bracket. But here's the rub: the Hokies won't be hosting a regional on their home turf in Blacksburg, despite a strong case to be one of the top 16 seeds.
All season long, Virginia Tech hovered in the top 16 of the national rankings, finishing the regular season at No. 3 in the ACC. They even gave the conference's top seed a run for their money in the ACC Championship, falling just 2-1. Perhaps most impressive? The Hokies went a perfect 6-0 against the SEC, including two wins over Georgia—a team that, ironically, earned a No. 3 seed and gets to host its own regional in Athens.
So why no home-field advantage for Virginia Tech? The NCAA cited hotel availability issues within the required 30-mile, 50-minute radius, but that hasn't seemed to stop other programs in the past. Virginia Tech officials pushed back, clarifying that the decision wasn't about their stadium, Tech Softball Park. Instead, the NCAA simply stated they didn't believe the Hokies were a top-16 seed, leaving many scratching their heads.
If the Hokies can power through the Baton Rouge gauntlet, they'll face the winner of the Tuscaloosa Regional—a bracket featuring Alabama, Southeastern Louisiana, Belmont, and USC Upstate. It's a tough road, but this is a team that knows how to rise to the occasion.
While it stings not to play in front of the home crowd, there's plenty to celebrate: this marks Virginia Tech's seventh consecutive NCAA tournament appearance, a testament to the program's consistency and grit. Now, it's time to lace up, hit the road, and prove the doubters wrong.
