Virginia Tech just landed a commitment that has the entire Hokies community buzzing. For the first time in seven years, the program has secured a recruit of this caliber, vaulting them into the Top 20 of the national recruiting rankings.
The star of the show is Peter Bourque, a 6-foot-4, 220-pound four-star quarterback from Hingham, Massachusetts, currently playing at Tabor Academy. Bourque initially committed to Michigan back in February but decided to reopen his recruitment, sparking a fierce battle among some of college football's biggest programs. Both Georgia and Penn State made strong pushes, but it was the connection with Head Coach James Franklin and quarterbacks coach Danny O'Brien that sealed the deal for the Hokies.
"I'm super close to that staff. I have a great relationship with Daniel O'Brien and Coach Franklin," Bourque shared, highlighting the personal bonds that swayed his decision. The pursuit was intense—Franklin had been after Bourque during his time at Penn State, and that relationship only strengthened once he took the helm in Blacksburg.
Bourque isn't just any recruit. Ranked as the No. 82 overall prospect and the No. 7 quarterback in the 2027 cycle, he's also the top player in Massachusetts. If he signs, he'll be the highest-ranked recruit to join Virginia Tech since offensive lineman Doug Nester in the 2019 class. That's a seven-year drought, and it's a massive win for the ACC program.
This commitment didn't just make headlines—it reshaped the entire recruiting landscape for the Hokies. Virginia Tech jumped 10 spots to No. 18 in the Rivals Industry Team Recruiting Rankings. The class now boasts 12 total commits, including three four-star athletes.
Looking at the broader roster, the Hokies are building a well-rounded group. Last month, Baltimore McDonogh School four-star defensive lineman Joseph Buchanan joined the fold, ranking as the No. 23 defensive lineman and No. 7 player in Maryland. He's one of three defensive linemen in the class, alongside Durham's Xavier Perkins and Severn's Brock Frisby.
In the secondary, Swainsboro, Georgia's four-star cornerback Chase Johnson committed just last week and is already a top-400 recruit. He teams up with Baltimore St. Frances Academy three-star safety Elijah Butler to form a promising defensive back haul. On offense, the Hokies are stocking up at wide receiver, too, with Rolesville's four-star Anthony Roberts and Roanoke's three-star standout joining the mix.
For Virginia Tech fans, this is more than just a signing—it's a statement. The Hokies are back in the conversation, and with a top-tier quarterback leading the charge, the future in Blacksburg has never looked brighter.
