The Royals offense has been clicking lately, but it appeared as if they might have a setback late in last night’s contest against the Athletic. Vinnie Pasquantino exited the game in the sixth inning after an at-bat in which he appeared to tweak something after a swing. The Royals later reported he exited the game with lower back tightness.
On Wednesday morning, on his regular appearance on “Cody and Gold” on 610 Sports, J.J. Picollo provided an update.
“He’s been dealing with it a bit here the last week,” said Piccolo, explaining that the back just tightened up last night for Vinnie. “The best way to categorize it right now is ‘day-to-day’, We don’t expect an IL situation at this point.”
Anne Rogers at MLB.com has more on how the Royals will handle his injury.
The Royals will see how Pasquantino feels on Wednesday before deciding whether he’ll start or what his availability will be throughout the game.
“Pushing to play,” Pasquantino said. “But, at the same time, it’s April. Got to be smart. Pushing for the long haul. See how I feel when I wake up. Probably go see the trainers in the morning, maybe get in the pool or something like that. See how I feel, see if I can get it to loosen up and go from there.”
Royals fans have noticed that Pasquantino has been applying a hot water bottle to his back in the dugout over the last few weeks. Picollo says this kind of injury is “manageable”, adding “Our expectation is he’ll be able to play with it.”
Pasquantino has been off to a slow start this year, hitting .167/.276/.324 through 28 games. He has begun to warm up lately, with four hits and six walks in his last four games, and he was 1-for-2 with a walk in last night’s game before exiting.
