Vincent Kompany had high hopes for Nicolas Jackson at Bayern Munich, but the striker's price tag proved too steep for the German giants to keep him permanently, according to legendary German midfielder Lothar Matthäus.

Jackson's loan spell at Bayern has been a mixed bag—10 goals and 4 assists in a season that showed flashes of promise but didn't fully convince the club's hierarchy to open their wallets. Yet Kompany, who values the Senegalese forward's work rate and attacking instincts, reportedly pushed hard behind the scenes to make the deal happen.

"Kompany is convinced of Jackson's abilities and would have liked to keep him in Munich," Matthäus revealed on Sky90. "But he's too expensive. Kompany has made it clear internally that he would like to keep Jackson, but obviously at a certain price that Chelsea might not accept."

Chelsea, who own Jackson's contract, have shown little willingness to negotiate a discount on his permanent transfer fee. With the Blues standing firm, Bayern have shifted their focus to Newcastle United's dynamic winger Anthony Gordon. While Gordon would command an even higher transfer fee, he offers greater versatility across the front line and a higher ceiling for future development—factors that may ultimately sway Bayern's decision.

For Jackson, this represents a disappointing end to what began as an exciting chapter in Munich. Reports suggest the 23-year-old had no desire to return to Chelsea and was actively building a new life in Bavaria. Now, he faces an uncertain future back in London, where he could be sold again or sent out on another loan until his contract winds down.

Whether Kompany's faith in Jackson was enough to change the club's mind remains to be seen, but for now, the numbers simply don't add up—and Bayern are already looking elsewhere for their next attacking star.
