The Steelbacks Foundation says the purchase will "unlock its potential as a community asset".

In a heartwarming move for grassroots cricket, a village club has secured its long-term future after a county side stepped in to purchase its historic ground. Brixworth Cricket Club (BCC) had been racing against time to raise funds to buy its home on Northampton Road, along with adjoining tennis courts, after the landlord decided to sell off his assets in the village. But now, thanks to a partnership with Northamptonshire County Cricket Club (NCCC) and the Steelbacks Foundation, the ground will be bought by a newly formed company led by the club itself.

While the financial details of the deal remain under wraps, the move marks a massive win for the local community. "This agreement ensures cricket will continue to be played at Brixworth for generations to come, cementing the club's role at the heart of the local community," NCCC said in a statement. The ground had previously been owned by businessman Dallas Burston, and in recent years, there had been whispers of potential development on the site. Those fears can now be put to rest.

Under the new setup, Brixworth will continue to host matches at the ground, with plans already in motion to invest in and upgrade the facilities. But this isn't just about preserving the past—it's about building for the future. NCCC revealed that the purchase will "create new opportunities to grow participation and engagement across the game," with a special focus on women's and girls' cricket, disability cricket, and the Northamptonshire player pathway. As part of the deal, the county club has also scrapped its previously proposed new-build development at Moulton, signaling a commitment to strengthening existing community hubs.

For the players and supporters at Brixworth, the news is nothing short of a dream come true. "This is a huge moment for Brixworth Cricket Club," said Andrew Roper from BCC. "Securing the ground means we can now concentrate on the important things of growing the game and serving the local community. We cannot be more excited to work with the Steelbacks Foundation... their passion equals ours, which is a great start." Karen Nicholson, chair of the Steelbacks Foundation, echoed that sentiment: "This is about more than protecting a cricket ground—it's about unlocking its potential as a community asset. It's a brilliant example of what can be achieved when clubs and county cricket come together."

From the pitch to the pavilion, this partnership is a reminder of the power of collaboration in sport—and a perfect reason to grab your whites and celebrate the game we love.
