Unai Emery has insisted that Aston Villa's future remains bright, even if their Europa League dream ends at the semi-final stage against Nottingham Forest. The Spanish manager, speaking ahead of Thursday's decisive second leg at Villa Park, emphasized that the club's progress under his leadership is about more than just one result.

Villa trail 1-0 after last week's first leg in this all-English clash, but Emery is refusing to let the tie define a season that has already seen significant achievements. The Birmingham club reached the UEFA Conference League semi-finals in 2023/24 and followed that up with a Champions League quarter-final appearance last season—a remarkable rise for a team that was fighting for Premier League survival just a few years ago.

"When I arrived here three and a half years ago, it was a dream to be playing a semi-final in the Europa League," Emery said. "Now we are here, and we must appreciate how far we have come."

Despite losing their last three games in all competitions, Villa remain on course for Champions League qualification next season. Emery, who has won the Europa League four times with Sevilla and Villarreal, believes the club is building something sustainable. "We are improving, myself as well, improving here. And we will have, after tomorrow, our way to set more challenges for the present or future. I don't think tomorrow is the last opportunity for us or for anyone."

The match itself carries a rich historical subplot. Nottingham Forest were European champions in 1979 and 1980, while Villa claimed the crown in 1982. Forest arrive unbeaten in 10 games, making them formidable opponents. But Emery sees the bigger picture. "Winning a trophy is very difficult. Very, very, very difficult. It's not a defeat if we are not achieving a trophy. The only way forwards is to keep going, improving, having opportunities in the present and the future."

With a 30-year wait for a major trophy weighing on the club, Emery's message is clear: this semi-final is a milestone, not a finish line. For fans wearing the claret and blue, the journey is just getting started.
