The Minnesota Vikings may have found a hidden gem in this year's draft class. While much of the attention has rightfully gone to the defensive reinforcements added on Day 1 and Day 2—including big-bodied tackles Caleb Banks and Domonique Orange, along with versatile linebacker Jake Golday—it's a later-round pick who could quietly become a fan favorite.
Enter Jakobe Thomas, the third-round safety selected 98th overall out of Miami. His arrival comes with an interesting backstory: the Vikings acquired that pick by trading 2024 Pro Bowl edge rusher Jonathan Greenard to the NFC East, also netting future draft capital and significant salary cap relief. It's a move that puts pressure on Minnesota to hit on these selections, especially after recent drafts produced fewer contributors than hoped.
ESPN's Field Yates is already predicting Thomas will make a quick impact, naming him among the Day 2 and Day 3 picks poised to contribute immediately. "The exact impact Thomas will make on the Vikings' defense is difficult to forecast," Yates wrote, "but that's a testament to defensive coordinator Brian Flores' creativity. Thomas has excellent size for a safety (6-foot-2, 200 pounds) and plays with an ultra-physical mentality."
That physicality is Thomas's calling card. A heat-seeking missile on the field, he's known for punishing hits and a fearless approach to contact—traits that could make him a natural successor to the legendary Harrison "The Hitman" Smith. Under Flores, safeties are deployed in multiple roles: some play almost like linebackers near the line of scrimmage, while others patrol the deep middle as the last line of defense. Thomas fits the former mold, thriving in the box and making plays on the ball rather than simply anchoring the secondary.
The good news? Flores has already shown he can maximize versatile safeties, having done so with Smith and Joshua Metellus in recent seasons. If Thomas can adapt quickly, he could become a key chess piece in one of the NFL's most creative defensive schemes. And for Vikings fans, that's a sleeper worth watching.
