Vikings Earn Surprise Spot on Super Bowl List

The Minnesota Vikings have found themselves in an unexpected spotlight, landing on NFL.com's list of five teams that could follow the Seattle Seahawks' surprising path to the Super Bowl. Remember last year when the Seahawks defied all odds, sprinting past expectations to not only reach the big game but win it all? That Cinderella story has analysts searching for the next team to pull off a similar upset, and the Vikings are right in the mix.

According to NFL.com's Tom Blair, Minnesota's blueprint is refreshingly straightforward: play suffocating defense, get just enough from quarterback Kyler Murray, and let head coach Kevin O'Connell steer the ship. Blair recently broke down the five teams that could mirror Seattle's run, naming the Chicago Bears, Cincinnati Bengals, Houston Texans, and Los Angeles Chargers alongside the Vikings.

So, what makes the Vikings a dark horse candidate? It starts with Brian Flores' defense. In 2025, that unit was a force to be reckoned with, ranking seventh in EPA per play (-0.14) and points allowed per game (19.6), and third in yards allowed per play (4.7). That's the kind of defensive backbone that can carry a team deep into January. The problem, as Blair notes, has been the offense's inability to keep pace. Minnesota finished with a point differential of just plus-11, matching their 9-8 record perfectly.

"Like the Texans, the Vikings have a defense that could drive true dominance, with just a little more support from the offense," Blair wrote. "Like Seattle, Minnesota has been fitfully competitive over the past few years. The Vikings have plenty of talent, and I have confidence in the coaching regime."

Adding to the optimism, the Vikings loaded up on defensive talent in last month's draft, adding four new rookies in the first three rounds. That infusion of young energy could be exactly what Flores needs to elevate an already stout unit to elite status.

Of course, there's one lingering question mark: front-office stability. Blair pointed out that the late-January firing of general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah introduces some uncertainty. "Whoever takes over as full-time GM might knock the job out of the park," he said, "but for now, it's an unknown."

If you're looking for reasons to believe in this Vikings team, start with the defense. Flores' men ranked third in the NFC in several key categories last season, and with a few offensive tweaks, this squad could be the surprise contender nobody saw coming. Whether they can replicate Seattle's magic remains to be seen, but for fans of purple and gold, the possibility is electric.
