Victor Wembanyama only needed three quarters to match the NBA's single-game playoff blocks record on Monday night.

Victor Wembanyama made NBA history on Monday night, but even his record-breaking performance wasn't enough to lift the San Antonio Spurs past the Minnesota Timberwolves in Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals.

The reigning Defensive Player of the Year put together a defensive masterclass, swatting away 12 shots to set a new NBA postseason single-game blocks record. Remarkably, he needed just three quarters to match the previous mark of 10 blocks, which had only been achieved three times in league history—by Hakeem Olajuwon, Mark Eaton, and Andrew Bynum (2012). Wembanyama broke the record early in the fourth quarter with a spectacular rejection of Anthony Edwards at the rim.

But despite his historic effort, the Spurs fell 104-102 at the Frost Bank Center, leaving them in a 1-0 series hole. Wembanyama's 12 blocks—the most ever in a playoff game—were a testament to his unique defensive impact, yet the Timberwolves found a way to surge ahead in the final minutes.

Edwards, returning from a nine-day absence due to a bone bruise in his left knee, played on a minutes restriction and came off the bench. But he wasted no time making his presence felt, sparking a decisive 12-2 run in the first quarter with a deep three-pointer and an immediate, fiery celebration directed at the Spurs bench.

For Wembanyama, this was only the sixth playoff game of his career—and he's already etched his name in the record books. But as the Spurs look to bounce back in Game 2, the question remains: can even a historic defensive performance carry a team to victory against a determined Timberwolves squad?
