Victor Wembanyama delivered a historic playoff performance on Friday night, leading the San Antonio Spurs to a 115-108 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves and putting his team up 2-1 in the Western Conference semifinals.
The rookie sensation erupted for 39 points on an efficient 13-of-18 shooting, grabbing 15 rebounds and swatting 5 blocks. It was, without question, the finest playoff showing of his young career—and one that etched his name alongside some of the game's greatest big men.
Before Friday, only Shaquille O'Neal, Hakeem Olajuwon, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Wilt Chamberlain had posted at least 39 points, 15 rebounds, and 5 blocks in a single playoff game. That's the kind of company Wembanyama is keeping now.
The game started as a dream for San Antonio, who stormed out to an 18-3 lead, silencing the Target Center crowd. But the Timberwolves showed their mettle, answering with a 19-5 run to close the first quarter and keep things tight.
Minnesota understood the assignment: challenge Wembanyama at every turn, harass San Antonio's ballhandlers, and never let the Spurs get comfortable. The officials let them play a physical game, resulting in 48 combined fouls, but the Timberwolves' defensive intensity couldn't derail Wembanyama's night.
The Spurs survived thanks to their own toughness and their superstar's heroics. Stephon Castle chipped in with 13 points and 12 assists, providing the support Wembanyama needed down the stretch.
Now, the Spurs have a chance to take a commanding 3-1 lead when the series continues with Game 4 on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock. The Timberwolves are on the ropes, and Wembanyama looks ready to deliver the knockout punch.
