In a heartfelt transition that blends legacy with new energy, St. Philip is set to see a change in its athletic leadership. After an incredible 20-year run as athletic director, Vicky Groat has announced she will step down this summer—though she’s not leaving the Tigers entirely.
Groat, a St. Philip alum who has worn many hats as a coach and administrator, will remain as the school’s volleyball coach and take on a new role as Director of Student Services. The decision, she says, comes down to family. “I have three grandsons who live in Wixom, and I’ve been missing T-ball games and those special moments,” Groat shared. “This move lets me spend more time with them while still staying connected to St. Philip.”
Stepping into the athletic director role is Blake Shaw, a seasoned coach with 16 years at Lakeview before joining the St. Philip community. Over the past year, Shaw has worked closely with Groat in the athletic office and served as an assistant coach for the boys basketball team. “I couldn’t be more excited,” Shaw said. “I came here to support Vicky, and it’s worked out perfectly that she’s ready to pass the torch. She’s been an incredible mentor.”
Shaw will officially take over as athletic director in June, inheriting a program with deep roots and a proud tradition. “Leaving Lakeview after 16 years was bittersweet, but St. Philip feels like home now,” he added. “The tradition here is special, and I’m thrilled to help build on it.”
For Groat, this isn’t a goodbye—it’s a new chapter. “It’s time for something different, but St. Philip will always be family,” she said. With Shaw ready to lead and Groat still on the sidelines, the Tigers are poised for a seamless handoff.
