Veteran wide receiver Scotty Miller is making a determined push to extend his NFL career, showing up at the Chicago Bears' rookie minicamp on a tryout basis after a quiet free agency period. The 30-year-old, who spent the 2024 and 2025 seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, is hoping to impress enough to earn a spot on the team's 90-man offseason roster.
Miller didn't waste any time making an impression. According to Larry Mayer of the team's official website, the receiver made a "dazzling diving catch deep down the right sideline" on the final snap of Friday's minicamp practice—a highlight-reel play that could turn heads in the Bears' coaching staff.
Head coach Ben Johnson noted that Miller has a pre-existing connection with receivers coach Antwaan Randle El, who coached him during his early years in Tampa Bay. "Randle El was with him when he was a young buck there in Tampa, so there are some shared experiences," Johnson told reporters. "Looking forward to seeing him run around and compete a little bit. From afar, I've been able to see the speed, quickness. He's certainly very intriguing."
Miller's journey in the NFL began as a sixth-round pick by the Buccaneers in 2019. He went on to win a Super Bowl with Tampa Bay in 2020—a season that remains his career highlight. That year, he hauled in 33 receptions for 501 yards and three touchdowns, showcasing the speed and quickness that made him a reliable deep threat. After four seasons in Tampa, he spent a year with the Atlanta Falcons before landing in Pittsburgh.
Now, with no other suitors in free agency, Miller is betting on his veteran savvy and familiar coaching ties to carve out a role in Chicago. For a Bears team looking to build depth at receiver, a player with Super Bowl experience and a willingness to compete could be just what they need.
