After nine seasons of grinding in the NFL, veteran quarterback Taylor Heinicke has officially called it a career. The 32-year-old announced his retirement on Thursday via a heartfelt Instagram post, bringing an end to a journey that began as an undrafted free agent and turned into a testament of perseverance.
"For 25 years, I had the pleasure to play this great sport of football," Heinicke wrote. "It has taught me a lot, not only about myself, but about life as well. Many ups and downs throughout the years, but the ups outweigh the downs tenfold."
Heinicke's path to the NFL was anything but conventional. After going undrafted out of Old Dominion in 2015, he signed with the Minnesota Vikings but was waived two years later. What followed was a whirlwind tour through four more teams—including a stint in the XFL—before he finally found a home with the Washington Commanders in 2020.
That's where Heinicke became a fan favorite. In 2021, he stepped in after Ryan Fitzpatrick's injury and started 15 games, showing flashes of brilliance with his gritty play and knack for extending drives. The next season, he again answered the call after Carson Wentz went down, finishing with a 12-11-1 record in 24 total starts for Washington.
His inspiring story resonated beyond the stat sheet. Heinicke's underdog mentality—a guy who went from sleeping on couches to leading an NFL offense—made him a symbol of resilience in a league that often overlooks players without a pedigree.
After leaving Washington in 2023, Heinicke signed with the Atlanta Falcons, starting four games. His final NFL stop came in 2024 as Justin Herbert's backup with the Los Angeles Chargers. He re-signed with the Chargers ahead of the 2025 season but was released before the year began.
Now, as he steps away from the game, Heinicke leaves behind a legacy that proves heart and determination can outshine any draft projection. "Excited for this next chapter of my life!" he said. For fans and teammates alike, his story will remain a reminder that sometimes the best players are the ones who never give up.
