Fermin, who hails from Pocono Mountain West High School in Pocono Summit, Pennsylvania, was originally a three-star prospect in VCU's 2022 signing class. After a quiet freshman season where he appeared in just 14 games and averaged 3.3 minutes per contest, Fermin exploded onto the scene as a sophomore. During the 2023-24 season, he started all 38 games for the Rams, posting averages of 5.2 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks per game—showcasing the defensive prowess that makes him a perfect fit for Tennessee's gritty style of play.

His junior campaign in 2024-25 saw him start 11 of 34 games, contributing 4.6 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks per contest. However, the 2025-26 season took a different turn. Fermin appeared in just four games, averaging 0.8 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks before taking a leave of absence following VCU's loss to North Carolina State on Nov. 17, 2025. According to Zach Joachi of the Richmond Times-Dispatch, he did not return to the team, setting the stage for his transfer to Tennessee.
