The Serie A relegation battle is heating up as three clubs—Cremonese, Lecce, and Cagliari—fight to avoid the drop to Serie B. With only a few matches left, the final relegation spot could even be decided by a dramatic play-off. Here’s everything you need to know.

In Round 36, Jamie Vardy’s Cremonese delivered a crucial 3-0 win over Pisa, with Vardy himself opening the scoring. Meanwhile, their relegation rivals struggled: Lecce fell 1-0 to Juventus, and Cagliari lost 2-0 to Udinese. This leaves Cremonese in 18th place, just one point behind Lecce and six behind Cagliari. Cagliari, however, are in the strongest position—they need only one more point to secure their Serie A status for another season.

If all three teams finish level on points, the “Classifica Avulsa” (mini-league) will decide who stays up, considering only matches between the three. In that scenario, Cagliari would come out on top with seven points, followed by Lecce (six) and Cremonese (four).

But if only two clubs finish tied, the drama intensifies. The relegated team would be determined by a two-legged play-off, with the team holding a better head-to-head record hosting the second leg. For example, Cremonese would host Lecce (thanks to a superior head-to-head) but would travel to Cagliari, who have a win and a draw against Vardy’s side this season. Lecce, meanwhile, would host Cagliari if they tie, having split their meetings (a 2-0 win and a 2-1 loss).

The final relegated team will join already-doomed Pisa and Verona in Serie B next season. With everything still to play for, every match—and every goal—counts. Will Vardy’s experience help Cremonese pull off the great escape, or will another club fall through the trapdoor?
