In a moment that felt scripted for the big screen, Jordan Vandergriff captured his first Funny Car win at the NHRA Southern Nationals—and honored a cherished family tradition in the process.

Right after clinching the victory at South Georgia Motorsports Park, the 31-year-old Atlanta native leaped from his race car and sprinted down the track toward the starting line. It was a direct tribute to his uncle, Bob Vandergriff Jr., who famously performed the same celebration after every Top Fuel win. As the iconic theme from Chariots of Fire boomed over the speakers, Fox Sports crew members scrambled after him, fellow John Force Racing teammate Jack Beckman ran toward him, and his uncle intercepted him for an emotional embrace.

"My uncle did it out of pure joy," Vandergriff said. "I was contemplating it in the car before the run, and I was like, if I get on the radio and they tell me I won, I’m doing it no matter what. It was just awesome!"

For Vandergriff, the run wasn't just about crossing the finish line first—it was a full-circle moment years in the making. Halfway up the return road, he thought, "this is what I trained my whole life for." His dedication to fitness paid off in a surprising way.

"I work out all the time. I do it to stay fit and then I realized in that moment, as I was running up, I think that’s why I’ve always done that," Vandergriff said. "I felt good running up, but it’s a little bit longer than you expect. I won’t do it again."

When he spotted his uncle over the wall, the moment became even more meaningful. "It was a surreal moment," Vandergriff recalled. "I thought, this is a perfect way to cap this win, to do it with him. I owe a lot to him as well. He gave me an opportunity to be in this position. I owe a lot to John Force for believing in me."

Vandergriff’s path to victory was nothing short of impressive. After qualifying third, he dispatched Jeff Arend in the first round with a blistering 3.950-second pass at 330.63 mph. He followed that up by taking down Spencer Hyde in the quarterfinals (3.956 e.t., 332.34 mph) and Hunter Green in the semifinals (3.964 e.t., 331.36 mph). But the biggest test came in the final round, where he faced No. 1 qualifier J.R. Todd—and came out on top in a race that will be remembered for years to come.

For drag racing fans and sports apparel enthusiasts alike, Vandergriff’s win is a testament to the power of tradition, hard work, and never giving up on a dream. Whether you're celebrating a victory or just hitting the track for fun, the right gear can make all the difference—just like the right mindset did for Vandergriff on his big day.
