Is a former Texan a key missing piece to the final roster?

The NFL offseason is a three-act play, and while the first two acts—free agency and the draft—steal the spotlight, it's the third that often decides a team's fate. Welcome to the secondary free agency market, where savvy front offices hunt for those one or two missing pieces that can turn a contender into a champion.

For the Houston Texans, the roster is in solid shape. They can field a starting 22 with confidence, and depth is no longer a glaring weakness—a luxury reserved for true playoff contenders. But here's the rub: every team is budgeted just seven draft picks (barring trades), and you can't solve every need with premium selections. That's where the secondary market comes into play.

Ironically, the unit that might need the most work is the one that performed best last season: the defense. Specifically, the edge rusher position stands out as a priority. With Denico Autry and Derek Barnett heading toward free agency (and no re-signings in sight), the Texans have a void to fill. Cap space is tight, so any addition will need to come on a team-friendly deal.

Enter an old friend: Jadeveon Clowney. The former Texan spent last season with the Dallas Cowboys on a $3.5 million contract. Spotrac projects his market value at around $5.7 million, which is likely too steep for Houston's current cap situation. But if the price drops closer to his 2025 rate, the Texans might find a way to make it work.

On the plus side, Clowney remains a dominant run defender and, when healthy and motivated, a disruptive pass rusher. The negatives? Well, he's now played for seven teams, earning a journeyman label that raises questions about consistency and fit. Still, in a secondary market where bargains are the name of the game, Clowney's upside might be worth the gamble. After all, you never know what he's truly capable of until he's wearing your colors again.
