Over the weekend, USC got some notable news on the recruiting front surrounding its first commit of the 2028 recruiting class

Big news out of USC this weekend—and it's the kind that keeps Trojans fans smiling. Back in March, the program secured its very first commitment of the 2028 recruiting class when four-star wide receiver Roye Oliver III pledged to join the squad. But now, Oliver is making a strategic move that actually strengthens USC's future.

According to Brandon Huffman of Rivals, Oliver is reclassifying to the 2027 cycle. That means he's jumping up a year to join a class that 247Sports already ranks as the No. 3 in the nation. It's a bold step, but one that fits a growing trend under head coach Lincoln Riley and general manager Chad Bowden.

Oliver hails from Hamilton High School in Chandler, Arizona, where he put up jaw-dropping numbers as a sophomore in 2025: 92 catches for 1,839 yards and 31 touchdowns. Those stats earned him high school All-American honors and turned heads across the country.

Before reclassifying, Rivals' industry rankings listed him as the No. 29 overall player in the 2028 class. Now, competing against older, stronger athletes, he's been rated as a three-star recruit, checking in at No. 425 overall and the No. 60 wide receiver in the 2027 class. It's a natural drop, but it doesn't diminish his potential.

Oliver's move continues a notable pattern for USC. This marks the third consecutive recruiting cycle where the Trojans have welcomed at least one player who reclassified upward. In a landscape where many athletes choose to be held back to gain size and strength, USC is flipping the script by betting on younger talent that's ready to compete sooner. Whether that strategy pays off will be one of the most intriguing storylines to watch.
