Starter Grant Govel, making his tenth appearance of the season, was unable to build on teammate Mason Edwards' strong outing from the series opener. Nebraska's bats came alive immediately, tagging Govel for four runs in a grueling 37-pitch first inning—the first time he's surrendered a first-inning run since late February.

The onslaught continued in the third, as the Cornhuskers launched a powerful display with back-to-back solo homers from Case Sanderson and Dylan Carey, followed by another from Drew Grego. By the time Govel exited after three innings, he had allowed seven runs on eight hits.
