When USC landed the No. 1 recruiting class for the 2026 cycle last December, it signaled a new era of talent in Los Angeles. Among the crown jewels of that class was five-star defensive end Luke Wafle, and according to his position coach, the hype is real.
In a recent interview with 247Sports, USC defensive ends coach Shaun Nua shared his early impressions of Wafle after the freshman's first spring camp with the Trojans. And the verdict? Wafle is already turning heads with his approach to the game.
"No matter what business you're in, no matter what profession you're in, you always start with the mindset," Nua said. "That young man's mindset and mentality, his makeup is up there. He's tough, intelligent and just willing to work."
Nua went on to highlight Wafle's maturity—a trait that often separates true freshmen from those who see the field early. "Maturity for someone that's straight out of high school [and] still should be in high school for his last semester. Very hard on himself and everything that he does, but also still withholds the confidence to still believe in himself and his strengths."
Perhaps most telling is Nua's observation of Wafle's self-awareness. "He understands his weaknesses, and it's eye opening for him that there's still a lot to learn about this game. Not only just situational football, the knowledge of the game, but of him realizing his weaknesses and then trying to strengthen them. But he's got the mentality that's ready for all of that."
For a program looking to return to national prominence, early contributions from top recruits like Wafle could be the difference. As the season approaches, all eyes will be on whether this five-star talent can translate his spring promise into immediate playing time—or if the coaching staff opts for a more patient development path.
