A leadership shake up just months before the World Cup

In a surprising move just two months before the 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off on home soil, the U.S. Soccer Federation is facing a major leadership change. Sporting Director Matt Crocker has resigned from his post, creating a significant shake-up as the U.S. Men's National Team enters its final preparations for the tournament.

The timing is undoubtedly jarring for fans and the soccer community. Crocker, who was instrumental in shaping the federation's sporting strategy, will have his duties temporarily distributed among existing staff. COO Dan Helfrich will oversee sporting operations, with support from Assistant Sporting Director Oguchi Onyewu and Head of Development for the Women’s Youth National Team, Tracey Kevins.

U.S. Soccer CEO JT Batson expressed gratitude for Crocker's work, stating, "Matt helped guide important steps across our sporting organization... We’re confident in our strategy, leadership team, coaches, and technical staff." The federation emphasized its commitment to both immediate World Cup readiness and long-term structural development.

In his farewell, Crocker called it a "privilege" to serve during a pivotal time for American soccer, expressing pride in the foundation built and confidence in the team moving forward. According to reports, Crocker is departing to assume a similar role with the Saudi Arabian Football Federation, aligning with their ambitious hosting plans for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup and the 2034 World Cup.

This unexpected transition puts the USMNT's final run-in to the World Cup under a new spotlight, testing the federation's depth and resilience at a critical moment.
