Cornish Pirates are setting sail for an exciting new chapter, thanks to a major investment from across the Atlantic. US-based Stonewood Capital Management has injected a seven-figure sum into the Championship side, marking the first time American investors have taken a stake in an English professional rugby union club.
Based in Penzance, the Pirates finished seventh in English rugby's second tier this season. But with fresh backing from Pittsburgh, the club's sights are set much higher. "There are things we can do to increase the value of the franchise and remain in the Champ," says Stonewood president Kenn Moritz. "If we decide to cross the threshold into the Premiership, that will be another step to increase the value of our investment."
This move comes amid a wave of transatlantic interest in English rugby. Exeter Chiefs members recently voted to allow a takeover by the American group that owns Premier League side AFC Bournemouth, while Newcastle Falcons and Bath have also secured additional investment. With talk of a franchise-based Premiership on the horizon, US money is flowing into the sport like never before.
So how did a Pittsburgh firm end up backing a Cornish club? Moritz says it started with an online article. After a few calls and a meeting with club officials late last year, things moved quickly. "We had a meeting of the minds," he explains. "It wasn't long after that we formalised a framework for an investment."
For fans of the Pirates—a club that has played in the second tier since 2003—this could signal a new era. Whether the goal is to build a powerhouse in the Championship or push for promotion to the Premiership, the message from the new investors is clear: the work starts now. "If we execute on the strategies we've been discussing, we'll be in a good place, regardless of which league we're playing in," Moritz adds.
From the Cornish coast to the boardrooms of Pittsburgh, this is a partnership built on ambition. And for rugby fans who love an underdog story, the Pirates might just be the team to watch.
