When Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin casually mentioned his summer plans, he probably didn't expect a playful scolding from a legendary coach. Appearing on "The Triple Option" show earlier this month, the California-born signal-caller shared his excitement for one of his favorite offseason activities: surfing.
"The waves haven't been great so far, but they should be picking up maybe this week, next week. Should be ready to go," Sayin told Fox analyst Rob Stone, sounding every bit the Southern California native he is.
That's when Urban Meyer, never one to let a coaching moment pass—even in jest—jumped in with a classic sideline quip. "If I was the head coach, I'd say 'get your [expletive] out of the water, Julian. You're not allowed to do that. I'm just kidding you." The former Buckeyes boss couldn't resist channeling his inner drill sergeant, even if it was all in good fun.
The lighthearted exchange highlights the unique challenge of managing a California kid in the heart of Big Ten country. Sayin, who grew up chasing waves on the West Coast, has openly discussed his lifelong love for the ocean. In a Big Ten Network special called "The Journey," he revealed he was "always in the water growing up," whether boogie boarding or surfing.
Not everyone was ready to side with Meyer, though. Mark Andrews, a co-host on the show, quickly came to Sayin's defense: "Why you hating on my boy, man? It's summer vacation!"
For Ohio State fans, this moment is a fun reminder that even elite quarterbacks need a break—and that some coaching instincts never fade, even in retirement. Whether Sayin will trade his surfboard for a playbook this summer remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: if Meyer had his way, he'd be keeping dry land between those cleats.
