The University of North Florida got clutching pitching from its bullpen and an unexpected clutch home run to win its ASUN Tournament opener.

The University of North Florida Ospreys kicked off their ASUN Tournament title defense in dramatic fashion, relying on a gritty bullpen performance and an unexpected power surge to secure an 8-5 victory over No. 6 Eastern Kentucky at the UNF Softball Complex.

Trailing 4-2 after a shaky first inning, the Ospreys turned to their bullpen committee—a strategy head coach Jeff Conrad has embraced throughout the tournament. Taylor Cook entered in relief of starter Macie Hunolt and immediately settled the game, retiring 10 consecutive batters while tossing 4.1 innings of three-hit ball with five strikeouts. All-ASUN second-team member Cameron Ponich, UNF's ace, then sealed the win with two hitless innings of relief.

The offensive heroics came from an unexpected source: Addyson Bruneman launched her first career home run, a clutch blast that provided the Ospreys with the momentum they needed to complete the comeback. The victory moves UNF (37-20) into the double-elimination bracket, where they'll face No. 3 North Alabama (35-14) on May 6.

"Now that we've survived, we know what it's like to be backed in the corner and have to win a game to advance," Conrad said. "I think with our group, we can take a deep breath, exhale and move into the next part of the tournament."

It's a different path than last season, when UNF entered as the No. 1 seed with a double bye and eventually swept EKU twice, including in the championship game. Without last year's ASUN Player and Pitcher of the Year Allison Benning, the Ospreys have had to adapt their approach in the circle.

"Without Allison, we've really struggled to find that bonafide shutdown pitcher in the circle this year," Conrad admitted. "So it's been kind of a committee approach, and today it paid off."

The Ospreys now look to carry that momentum forward, knowing they've already shown the resilience needed to survive and advance in postseason play.
