Apr. 17—GRAND FORKS — As the 2026 spring ball schedule nears an end for the UND football program, the Fighting Hawks are sorting out running back depth in search of a new lead ball carrier. That's nothing new for UND in recent history, as the Hawks have had a different leading rusher five years in a row — Sawyer Seidl (2025), Isaiah Smith (2024), Gaven Ziebarth (2023), Tyler Hoosman (2022) and ...

The search for a new feature back is a spring tradition in Grand Forks, and the 2026 edition is in full swing for the UND Fighting Hawks. With spring ball winding down, the competition to become the next lead ball carrier is heating up, continuing a remarkable trend: UND has produced a different leading rusher for five consecutive seasons.

Enter Matt Lawson, a dynamic sophomore transfer from Illinois State who is making a strong case to be the next name on that list. Standing at 5-foot-10 and 197 pounds, Lawson brings a versatile skill set that has immediately caught the attention of the coaching staff. He will be pushing returners Charles Langama and Colton Brunell for the top spot when fall camp arrives.

"He's one of one," said UND running backs coach D.J. Davis. "He brings his own talent, having the skill set to do it in the run game but also unique being able to catch it out of the backfield." Davis praised Lawson's humble, hard-working approach, highlighting his potential as an every-down back with the "juice and elusiveness" to make plays in space.

Lawson arrives with promising experience, having rushed for 447 yards as a true freshman at Illinois State in 2024. His transition to UND has been smooth, aided by a familiar connection—he played 7-on-7 football in high school with current Hawks starting quarterback Jerry Kaminski. That existing chemistry could be a significant asset for the offense.

"These boys love football, and the community loves football," Lawson said of his new home. "It was a really warm welcome. You wake up, it's football. I love it." As he grows more comfortable with the playbook, Lawson is embracing a versatile role, viewing himself as a dynamic back capable of contributing both on the ground and as a receiver.

With last season's 1-2 punch of Sawyer Seidl and Gaven Ziebarth moving on, the door is wide open. Lawson's blend of proven production, pass-catching ability, and fresh energy makes him a compelling contender to continue UND's impressive streak of uncovering new rushing talent and lead the Hawks' backfield into a new era.
