Apr. 10—LAS VEGAS — UND defenseman Abram Wiebe is headed to the NHL. Wiebe, a 6-foot-3 junior from Mission, B.C., has signed a contract with the Calgary Flames and report directly to the NHL squad, according to multiple sources. The path to the NHL is a dream for every college hockey player, and for University of North Dakota defenseman Abram Wiebe, that dream is now a reality. The 6-foot-3 junior from Mission, B.C., has officially signed an entry-level contract with the Calgary Flames and will report directly to the NHL club for the final stretch of their season.

This exciting move comes after the Flames acquired Wiebe's rights from the Vegas Golden Knights in January as part of the Rasmus Andersson trade. Originally a seventh-round pick by Vegas in 2022, Wiebe chose to return to UND for his junior season, a decision that paid major dividends. He was a key contributor on the blue line, helping the Fighting Hawks capture the NCHC's Penrose Cup as regular-season champions and advance to the NCAA Frozen Four for the first time in ten years.

Wiebe's development at UND was impressive. After a solid freshman campaign (1 goal, 10 points), he took a significant step forward as a sophomore (4 goals, 24 points). This past season, he capped his collegiate career with his best offensive output yet, posting 5 goals and 29 points while finishing with a strong plus-13 rating. His experience also grew internationally, representing the U.S. Collegiate Selects at the prestigious Spengler Cup in Switzerland this past December.

With the Flames having four games remaining—on the road in Seattle and then home against Utah, Colorado, and Los Angeles—Wiebe will get a valuable early taste of the NHL pace. His signing may signal the start of a trend for UND, as junior defenseman Jake Livanavage is also generating considerable interest as an undrafted free agent. For Wiebe, the next chapter of his hockey journey begins now in Calgary.
