The North Carolina men's lacrosse team entered Sunday's ACC Championship game with high hopes after a thrilling overtime win against Virginia earlier this season. But what started as a dream quickly turned into a nightmare.

The second-seeded Tar Heels jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first five minutes, looking every bit the championship contender. Then the fourth-seeded Cavaliers flipped the script in devastating fashion, rattling off 11 unanswered goals before UNC could find the net again in the third quarter. The final score—16-6—marked Carolina's worst loss since 2022.

Digging into the numbers, the Tar Heels actually outshot Virginia 45-41, but the Cavaliers were more efficient with 26 shots on goal to UNC's 24. Turnovers were nearly identical (15 for Carolina, 14 for Virginia), but the real story was in the trenches: Virginia dominated ground balls 41-24 and edged out the faceoff battle 13-12.

As if the blowout loss wasn't tough enough, UNC also saw star midfielder Owen Duffy leave the game in the third quarter with an injury and never return. Duffy leads the team in both assists (39) and points (69), making his status for the NCAA Tournament a major concern. The silver lining? Duffy, along with redshirt sophomore Peter Thomann and junior Brady Wambach, earned spots on the all-tournament team.

Now the Tar Heels must regroup quickly. Despite the loss, Carolina earned the #3 seed in the NCAA Tournament and will host unseeded Albany in the second round this Saturday at 12:00 p.m. ET on ESPNU. For a team that knows what it's like to bounce back from adversity, this is the ultimate test of resilience.
