The UNC men's lacrosse team made a statement in their NCAA Tournament opener on Saturday, dismantling UAlbany with a dominant 24-6 victory at Dorrance Field. After a tough 16-6 loss to Virginia in the ACC Championship, the Tar Heels needed a bounce-back performance—and they delivered in historic fashion.
Attackman Dominic Pietramala stole the show, etching his name into the NCAA record books. Pietramala netted 10 goals, breaking the single-game tournament record. He wasted no time, opening the scoring just three minutes into the game and completing a hat trick with one second left in a explosive seven-goal first quarter for UNC. By halftime, he had seven goals, and he added two more in the third before sealing the record with his 10th in the fourth quarter.
The Tar Heels (13-4, 2-2 ACC) came out firing, building a 12-2 lead by the break. They kept the pressure on after halftime, adding seven goals in the third quarter and five more in the fourth. It was a complete team effort, but Pietramala's performance was the highlight, showcasing the kind of firepower that makes UNC a dangerous contender.
For UAlbany (11-6, 6-0 America East), Alex Pfeiffer and Ryan Doherty each scored two goals, but the Great Danes were simply outmatched against a Tar Heels squad firing on all cylinders. UNC's defense also stepped up, limiting Albany's chances and keeping the game firmly in control.
With the win, UNC earns a much-needed week off before heading to Long Island for a May 16 showdown against the winner of Yale and Syracuse. The Tar Heels already beat Syracuse 14-9 in April, but they haven't faced Yale (9-5, 4-2 Ivy League) this season. Either way, this performance sends a clear message: UNC is locked in and ready to make a deep tournament run.
