While the North Carolina Tar Heels are still months away from kicking off their 2026 season—the second under head coach Bill Belichick—the program is already looking ahead. After a disappointing 2025 campaign, UNC is focused on rebounding and building momentum for the future. And that future just got a little brighter on the recruiting trail.

On Friday, the Tar Heels secured a key commitment from the 2027 class, landing three-star defensive back Trey Johnson out of Texas. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound prospect made his pledge just a few months after receiving an offer from the program, signaling strong and swift interest between both sides.

Interestingly, Johnson hasn’t yet visited Chapel Hill. But the consistent communication from the coaching staff—and their clear vision for rebuilding the program—was enough to seal the deal. That kind of trust speaks volumes about the culture Belichick and his team are cultivating, even from a distance.

According to On3 rankings, Johnson is currently rated No. 1,265 nationally, No. 121 among defensive backs, and the No. 156 player in the talent-rich state of Texas. He chose North Carolina over offers from notable programs such as Arizona State, Baylor, Houston, and Texas Tech—a strong sign that the Tar Heels are competing well beyond their immediate region.

With Johnson’s commitment, UNC now has five pledges in the 2027 class. As the program works to turn the page on a tough season, these early recruiting wins are laying the foundation for a brighter future in Chapel Hill.
