New UNC coach Mike Malone is working to keep starting point guard Derek Dixon, but his future in Chapel Hill is growing less certain.

The winds of change are blowing through Chapel Hill, and they might be carrying starting point guard Derek Dixon out of town. New head coach Mike Malone has made retaining the Tar Heels' portal entrants a top priority, but keeping Dixon in Carolina blue is becoming a serious challenge.

The buzz now strongly points Dixon toward the Arizona Wildcats. According to 247Sports' Crystal Ball projections, the Final Four-bound program is the likely destination for the floor general, who entered the transfer portal on April 6. If he departs, he would follow Jonathan Powell (Pittsburgh) as the second key player to leave UNC this offseason.

Dixon's potential exit would be a significant loss for a team looking to stabilize under new leadership. Originally brought in to provide backcourt depth behind Kyan Evans, Dixon's poise and command ultimately won him the starting job. While not a high-volume scorer, his impact was undeniable; the Tar Heels' offense simply operated with more fluidity and control when he was at the helm.

His clutch gene was on full display early, helping engineer a crucial road comeback at Kentucky in December. He truly cemented his role as the season's catalyst in a January upset at Virginia, dishing out seven assists and scoring 11 points to spark a turnaround for a team that had started just 2-3 in ACC play.

In 33 games (16 starts), Dixon averaged 6.5 points, 2.7 assists, and 2.3 rebounds, proving to be a steadying force. His departure would leave a major question mark at the point guard position for Coach Malone, highlighting the high-stakes nature of the modern college basketball transfer portal.
