The North Carolina Tar Heels are holding strong in the latest D1Baseball rankings, staying put at No. 2 as the regular season winds down and postseason play looms. It's been a week of highs and lows for the Diamond Heels (37-9-1, 17-7 ACC), but their resilience has kept them among college baseball's elite.
After seeing their midweek winning streak snapped in a lopsided 12-2 loss to Coastal Carolina on Tuesday, UNC bounced back in emphatic fashion Sunday. The Tar Heels mercy-ruled archrival Duke 13-0 in just seven innings, a statement win that showcased their offensive firepower. They wasted no time, plating six runs in the first inning alone against a reeling Blue Devils squad. Scoring continued in the second, third, fourth, and sixth frames, while Duke managed just five baserunners all day.
Macon Winslow, a Duke transfer, enjoyed a career day against his former team, racking up three hits and five RBIs. Nine different North Carolina batters recorded hits, but catcher Colin Hynek was the only other player with multiple RBIs. The deep lineup is a key reason why the Tar Heels remain a top-five team, trailing only UCLA in the national rankings, with Georgia Tech right behind them.
UNC's strength isn't just at the plate—their pitching staff is a force to be reckoned with. Ace Jason De Caro boasts an 8-2 record, a stellar 2.07 ERA, and 54 strikeouts, but the real depth lies in the bullpen. Freshman Caden Glauber (6-0, 62 K) and sophomore Walker McDuffie (6-2, 65 K) are nightmare matchups for any opponent. This blend of power hitting and lockdown pitching has the Diamond Heels poised for a deep postseason run.
Up next, UNC hosts Winthrop on Wednesday for their final midweek game at Boshamer Stadium, followed by a three-game weekend series against Pitt. The regular season wraps up with a trip to UNC-Wilmington (May 12) and a pivotal series at NC State (May 14-16), before the ACC Tournament kicks off in Durham. With the postseason on the horizon, the Tar Heels are locked in and ready to make some noise.
