The UK is reigniting its Olympic ambitions, with the government confirming it is in the early stages of exploring a bid to host the Summer Games and Paralympics in the 2040s. The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) told the BBC on Wednesday that it is "engaged in discussions about supporting potential bids," marking the first serious consideration of a UK-hosted Games since London 2012.

According to the DCMS, initial feasibility work will evaluate critical factors such as projected costs, socio-economic benefits, and the likelihood of a successful bid. As part of a broader push to secure major tournaments, the government is also exploring legislation that would make it a criminal offence to resell tickets without authorization for specific events—including the UEFA Euro 2028, which the UK and Ireland are co-hosting. Officials argue this crackdown on unauthorized resale "will make it easier to bid for, secure, and deliver major sporting events," protecting fans and ensuring fair access.

The timing is notable: Los Angeles is set to host the 2028 Olympics, while Brisbane will welcome the world in 2032. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has yet to award hosting rights for the 2036 Games or beyond, leaving the door open for future contenders. Germany, meanwhile, has expressed interest in hosting the Summer Games in 2036, 2040, or 2044.
