The Kentucky Wildcats are making moves in the transfer portal, and their latest target brings a massive presence back home. After securing commitments from backcourt players Zoom Diallo and Alex Wilkins, head coach Mark Pope is now focusing on rebuilding the frontcourt, where Malachi Moreno stands as the primary returning contributor.

Enter Gabe Dynes, a 7-foot-5 center from Independence, Kentucky, who entered the portal from USC. According to reports from On3’s Joe Tipton, the Wildcats have reached out, joining a crowded list of suitors that includes Tennessee, Arizona, Louisville, and Ole Miss. The connection runs deep—KSR’s Jacob Polacheck reports that Dynes recently had a FaceTime call with Pope and grew up a fan of the coach, watching plenty of Kentucky basketball.

Dynes’ journey is a fascinating one. An unranked recruit out of Simon Kenton High School, he first made his mark at Youngstown State, where he developed into an elite shot-blocker, averaging 3.1 blocks per game as a sophomore. After transferring to USC, he served in a reserve role, playing 11.9 minutes per game while shooting a remarkable 78.8% from the field, albeit in limited attempts. His size alone makes him a unique defensive asset, though his free-throw shooting (a career 43.6%) remains a work in progress.

With one season of eligibility left, the big question is about fit and playing time. Dynes may seek a program where he can command heavy minutes, but the allure of finishing his college career in his home state, potentially in a similar rotational role at a premier program like Kentucky, could be a powerful draw. As Pope looks to solidify his roster for the upcoming season, adding a hometown giant like Dynes would be a compelling storyline for the Big Blue Nation.
