In a weekend filled with historic milestones at the UIL state tennis championships, Grapevine's Sara Gyorgy added another gold medal to her collection, while W.T. White's Brodie Keller etched his name in his school's record books.
Gyorgy, a junior who moved from Hungary to Texas just a few years ago, partnered with Noah Malin to claim the Class 5A mixed doubles title. The duo defeated Midlothian's Caleb Hobbs and Hannah Hobbs with a commanding 6-4, 6-3 victory at the Northside ISD Tennis Center in San Antonio. For Gyorgy, this marks her third state championship—a remarkable achievement considering she had to navigate a new country, language, and school system upon her arrival.
Meanwhile, the W.T. White tennis program celebrated a breakthrough moment. Brodie Keller became the first player in school history to earn a medal at the state tournament, reaching the Class 5A boys singles final. Though he fell to Frisco Lebanon Trail's Aaditt Rishi 6-3, 6-2, Keller's silver medal is a significant achievement for a Dallas ISD program that has been chasing a boys singles state title since Oak Cliff's Doc Barr won it all back in 1929.
"I really wanted the state championship to represent my school, for my family, for my coach, for myself, too," Keller said after the match. "My opponent played a really good match. Sometimes you've just got to tip your hat to the other guy."
Rishi, who previously won mixed doubles state titles the past two seasons, was one of two Dallas-area athletes to claim singles gold. Allen's Sebastian Zavala also impressed, defeating Katy Seven Lakes' Aidan Xu 6-3, 6-2 in the Class 6A boys singles final. Kimball's Cruz Beltran rounded out the local medalists with a bronze in 4A singles.
From historic firsts to repeat champions, this year's UIL state tennis tournament showcased the incredible depth of talent emerging from Dallas-area programs, proving that hard work and determination can lead to unforgettable moments on the court.
