The Hawaii Rainbow Warriors baseball team showcased a classic recipe for victory on Saturday, leaning on strong pitching and clutch hitting to secure a 5-3 win over Cal State Bakersfield at Hardt Field. The result evens the crucial three-game series, setting up a decisive Sunday finale.

Starter Hekili Robello set the tone, working 6 2/3 solid innings while allowing three runs. The real drama, however, unfolded late in the game with Brody Martin-Grudzielanek on the mound. Recently transitioned to the closer role, Martin-Grudzielanek delivered a masterclass in relief, earning a tense seven-out save that required both brawn and brains.

With two outs in the eighth inning and a runner on, a mound visit from head coach Rich Hill turned strategic. It was Martin-Grudzielanek who suggested a pick-off play, a bold idea he then executed perfectly, catching pinch-runner Taison Miller to snuff out the threat. He then slammed the door in the ninth, surrendering a leadoff single before striking out the next three batters to seal the win.

The offense provided timely support, breaking through with Kamaehu Sanchez's RBI double. They added two more in the fifth on a hit-by-pitch and a fielder's choice, before tacking on crucial insurance runs in the seventh via a wild pitch and an opposite-field single from Draven Nushida.

With the series now tied, all eyes turn to Sunday's rubber match. First pitch for the series finale is set for 10 a.m. Hawaii time as the 'Bows look to capture the series win.
