A University of Georgia men's basketball player is facing legal trouble after a high-speed traffic stop this week. Freshman Kareem Stagg was arrested in Oconee County on Wednesday, casting an early shadow on his collegiate career.
According to the incident report, a deputy observed a gray Tesla SUV traveling on SR 316 and clocked it at 87 mph in a 65-mph zone—a significant speed violation that prompted an immediate stop.
The situation escalated when Stagg, 18, could not produce a valid driver's license. He initially presented a driver's course certificate, but a records check revealed he only possesses a learner's permit. The deputy stated Stagg admitted he knew he required a licensed driver over 21 to be present while operating the vehicle.
Stagg was subsequently arrested and charged with driving without a valid license. He was later released from jail after posting a $1,245 bond.
UGA Athletics has acknowledged the incident, stating, "We are aware of the charges and are actively gathering additional information. As this is an ongoing legal matter, we will not be providing further comment at this time." For a young athlete, off-court decisions can be just as critical as performance on the hardwood, and this serves as a stark reminder of the responsibilities that come with being a student-athlete.
