Georgia Bulldogs freshman forward Kareem Stagg is facing legal trouble following a traffic stop in the Athens area. The 18-year-old basketball player was arrested by the Oconee County Police Department for speeding and driving without a valid license.
According to reports, Stagg was clocked driving 87 mph in a 65-mph zone in a gray Tesla SUV. Upon being pulled over, he presented a driver's education certificate to the officer. A records check revealed that certificate was linked only to a learner's permit, not a full driver's license, leading to his arrest.
The University of Georgia Athletics Department has acknowledged the incident, stating they are "aware of the charges and are actively gathering additional information." They declined further comment, citing the ongoing legal nature of the matter.
This off-court issue comes after Stagg's promising debut season with the Bulldogs. The freshman appeared in 33 games, averaging 4.8 points and 2.4 rebounds in just under 13 minutes per contest. His role was expected to grow in the upcoming season, making this a significant distraction for both the player and the program.
For a young athlete, navigating the spotlight and responsibilities that come with being a Division I player is a major challenge. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of accountability and decision-making, both on and off the hardwood, as players build their careers and represent their universities.
