When Juan Diaz steps into the Octagon for his UFC debut at UFC Vegas 117, he's not just fighting for a win—he's fighting to make a statement. The Peruvian standout (15-1-1 MMA) faces a stiff test in Malcolm Wellmaker (10-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC), a highly-touted prospect who's already tasted victory inside the promotion. But Diaz isn't intimidated. In fact, he sees this matchup as the perfect launching pad for his UFC career.
"If I can put it in one word, it's 'pressure,'" Diaz said through an interpreter at Wednesday's UFC Fight Night 276 media day. "I'm not going to give him any space. It's not focusing on what he does, but more on focusing on what I can do."
Diaz, who earned his shot through a dominant run on the regional circuit, knows that debuting on the main card is a rare privilege. He's determined to make the most of it by utilizing every tool in his arsenal. "We're going to strike, we're going to go on the ground, we're going to wrestle. I'm going to be pressuring him all the time," he added. "I'm ready for all three rounds, but I don't think this time around is going to the judges."
For Wellmaker, this fight offers a chance to bounce back from his first professional loss. But Diaz believes the matchup was designed to fast-track his own rise. "I got really excited," Diaz said about the fight. "He's a very good fighter. He's a fighter with a lot of hype. He's a fighter with power. So yeah, I see it as a good challenge."
With UFC Vegas 117 set for Saturday at the Meta APEX in Las Vegas, Diaz is ready to prove he belongs. "If the UFC is putting these tests in front of me, it's because I can do it, so I can pass it. I'm coming to win and to leave my name here in the UFC. 'Pegajoso' is here to stay."
