Melquizael Costa headlines UFC Vegas 117 against Arnold Allen

Melquizael Costa is stepping into the spotlight for the first time as a UFC headliner, and he's not about to let anyone—not even Ronda Rousey—steal his thunder. The Brazilian featherweight faces Arnold Allen atop UFC Vegas 117 on May 16, but the event lands on a night stacked with major combat sports action. While Costa and Allen battle it out at the UFC APEX, MVP MMA makes its Netflix debut with a blockbuster card headlined by Rousey vs. Gina Carano and featuring stars like Nate Diaz, Mike Perry, and Francis Ngannou.

For Costa, the competition is just another challenge in a career that's never taken the easy road. "Have you ever seen anything come easy for me, brother? It always comes with some kind of challenge," he told MMA Fighting with a laugh. "Like, 'You're going to headline the card but you'll have to compete with Ronda.' Alright then."

The UFC Vegas 117 lineup also features Doo Ho Choi vs. Daniel Santos in the co-main event, with ranked fighters Ketlen Vieira and Jacqueline Cavalcanti squaring off on the prelims. But Costa isn't worried about the star power on the other network. In fact, he's betting his fighting style will win over fans who might be flipping channels.

"If it was the Ronda from years ago, okay. But it's today's Ronda, so I'm good with it. I trust my skills," Costa said, adding that he expects "plenty of time" for fans to catch his fight on Paramount+ before Netflix's main event. "And besides, there'll probably be a lot of boring fights on Netflix. People will say, 'Melk is fighting, leave it on this instead.'"

Costa admits he was initially frustrated about the timing—joking that he was "pissed off" there were ads during his walkout music last time—but now he's fully focused on delivering a show-stopping performance. "It's going to be at the APEX, but it'll still be the main event. The show will be ready for me," he said. "I don't care if Canelo Alvarez is fighting the same night. I'm still going to steal the show."

For fight fans, May 16 is shaping up to be a marathon of MMA action. And if Costa has his way, the highlight reel will come from the UFC APEX, not the Netflix broadcast. Whether you're tuning in for the legend of Rousey or the rise of Costa, one thing is certain: this Brazilian is ready to prove that headlining a card means more than just having your name on the poster.
