The University of Evansville Purple Aces are finding their rhythm in Missouri Valley Conference play, but their journey is defined by thrilling, late-game drama. While the team searches for more consistent offensive production, they've mastered the art of the comeback, becoming the definition of "walk-off specialists."
This resilience hasn't gone unnoticed, as the conference recently honored two Aces for their standout performances. Pitcher Tanner Graham earned MVC Freshman of the Week, while Drew McConnell took home Player of the Week honors, highlighting the team's dual-threat potential.
The real story, however, is written in the final innings. In a span of just over two weeks, UE has engineered three electrifying walk-off victories. It started on March 27th with a three-run homer from Ryan Seddon to defeat Illinois State. The magic continued with an 11th-inning RBI single from Tate Deal to edge out Indiana, and culminated last Friday with Seddon again playing hero, delivering a 10th-inning single to secure a win over Southern Illinois.
"I feel like we’ve just got to get an early lead... punch them in the mouth right away," said infielder Reagan Reeder. "It is awesome to walk off, but it’s nice to win in 8 1/2 innings also."
Head coach Wes Carroll acknowledges the tension but sees immense value in these high-pressure wins. He believes the team's ceiling is directly tied to its evolving offense. "We’re building a lot of character from it," Carroll stated. "We know when we get in the conference tournament it’s going to have to be those late-inning heroics... We’re still searching for the best version of our club, and we feel like here we are really learning a lot about ourselves."
The Aces look to carry this momentum into their next challenge, a rematch against the Indiana Hoosiers in Bloomington on Wednesday, April 15th. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
