The Dayton Flyers' backcourt is facing a significant shift as sophomore guard De'Shayne Montgomery, the team's second-leading scorer, has announced his decision to enter the 2026 NCAA transfer portal.
Montgomery made the announcement via social media, marking the third departure from last season's roster, following teammates Bryce Heard and Sean Pouedet into the portal. In his statement, Montgomery expressed gratitude while seeking a new challenge: “This wasn’t an easy decision, but I believe it’s the best step for me to continue growing and to compete at the highest level.”
His exit leaves a notable gap in the Flyers' lineup. During the 2025-26 campaign, Montgomery was a dynamic two-way player, averaging 13.4 points per game and leading the team with 77 total steals. His 481 points were crucial for a Dayton squad that finished 25-12 (12-6 in the Atlantic 10) and advanced to the third round of the NIT.
This move continues a well-traveled collegiate journey for the guard; it is the fourth time Montgomery has entered the transfer portal, having previously played at Mount St. Mary's and Georgia before his stint at Dayton. His search for the right fit underscores the fluid nature of modern college basketball rosters, where adaptability is key for both players and programs.
